The Start of a Backyard Garden

A backyard garden can be as simple as growing a single plant. That is where it begins.

I started mine in the Summer of 2023 with 2 L- shaped galvanized raised beds from Northern Tool + Equipment. In those beds, I grew Carolina Reapers, habaneros, jalapeños, and bell peppers. Not everything had a perfect setup, and that was part of the journey.

“We live in a HOA community, so I had to improvise on how I went about things.”

We live in an HOA community, which usually means no permanent structures that are not approved by the committee. I also knew this was not our forever home, so everything had to be temporary and adaptable. The raised beds held the hot peppers, while the back deck became an extension of the garden. Grow bags were placed on tables, where I grew tomatoes and bell peppers.

Not everything had a perfect setup, and that was part of the journey.

Despite the limitations, everything grew. Not perfectly, but enough to show me what was possible. The tomatoes and bell peppers were smaller than expected, but they were mine. Grown from my hands, in my space.

“There is a different kind of pride that comes from growing your own food and from starting with nothing and seeing it through.”

At that point, I did not understand soil structure, nutrient balance, or plant behavior. I was not thinking about yield optimization or irrigation systems. I was simply growing.

That experience planted something deeper. It showed me that gardening does not start with knowledge, it starts with action.

You do not need the perfect setup. You do not need land. You do not even need confidence. You just need to start.

Enjoy a look back at where it all started vs. where I am currently.
